Contacts and Groups

Q: Why does Jott not recognize my contact when I call 866-JOTT-123?
A: Voice recognition can be tricky and depends on several different factors, including accents and pronunciation. You can phonetically spell out how you pronounce names using the Sounds Like feature in the contact info you have provided. Just click the Contacts link on the right side of the My Jotts page, and then again on the name of the contact you are having trouble with. There you will see a "Sounds Like" text box. Use spaces to separate sounds and help teach our voice recognition system how you pronounce the names of everyone on your contact list.

Both! When you send a Jott message, we translate your voice to text, and can deliver your message to someone in both email and text. In the email, they will be able to easily click on a link to hear your voice. Q: What on earth is a CSV file?
A: A CSV file stands for Comma Separated Values and it is simply a spreadsheet with your data (contacts) in it. You can use a CSV file to upload your contacts to Jott. If you have never used a CSV file before, we recommend trying to import just a handful of contacts first, to make sure they show up in your Jott account the way you want them to (first and last name, email address, cell phone number). Click here to learn how to export your contacts to a CSV file from Outlook.

If you plan to use a CSV file to import your contacts from Gmail, make sure to select the option "Outlook's CSV format (for importing into Outlook or other applications)".

Getting Started

Q: I live outside of the US and Canada, can I use Jott?
A: You can only register with Jott with a US or Canadian telephone number.
Q: Jott says my caller ID is wrong, what do I do?
A: If you are calling from Canada, please refer to the information listed here.

Calling from within the U.S.? If you are sure your caller ID is not being blocked, it's possible your mobile provider does not want to pass on the correct caller ID information to a toll free number. In this case, give our alternate number, 347-523-8843 a try. Still having trouble after that? Contact your phone provider and let them know they are not sending the right caller ID information to us.

Q: I never received the registration email, what do I do?
A: The first step is to check your Spam/junk mail folder. If your registration email is not in there, please fill out the support form and we will send you a new one!

A: Our system is set up to only send email when you Jott yourself. If you would like to receive a receipt text message of every Jott you send (including the ones to yourself), please select the "Confirmation text message" option in the Phones section of the Settings page.

Q: When I Jott someone, do they get my voice, or the text translation?
A: Both! We transcribe your message into text and send it to your contacts, but we also send an audio link, or play back number to your contacts. This way if a message is unclear, they can listen to your voice, or if you want to send your friend a birthday card, you can actually sing Happy Birthday to them!
Q: I can't verify my phone number, what should I do?
A: If you are calling from Canada, please read the information provided here. Calling from within the U.S.? Give our alternate number, 347-523-8843, a try.

Q: What type of phone can I use with Jott?
A: It's best if you use your cell phone as you can Jott on the go and also receive Jott messages as text messages. You can use a landline, but you will not be able to receive Jott messages as text messages on this line.
Q: Does the person I Jott to need to be a Jott member?
A: No, you can send a Jott email to anyone of your contacts and a Jott text message to anyone of your contacts with a text enabled phone.
Q: Is Jott free?
A: The Jott service is free during beta. However, your cellular carrier will apply their standard text messaging charges (if any) that apply to receiving text messages, or from you sending text messages to Jott.

If you Jott yourself, you can choose to only receive an email. The only charges you will see are usage of your phone minutes. You can adjust these options on the Settings page.

Currently, text messages that Jott sends on your behalf do not incur a charge to you.
Q: What are the charges if I Jott to someone else?
A: If you include the phone numbers for your contacts so that you can communicate with colleagues, friends or family by text message, they will get charged their regular "texting" fee by their carriers.
Q: I am from Canada, why can't I Jott myself when I call 1-866-JOTT-123?
A: Jott requires caller ID to know who is sending a Jott to what contact information. In an effort to protect your privacy, most Canadian mobile providers have blocked caller ID information from being passed to toll free numbers. This leaves the alternative of using local access numbers across the country, so that everyone can send Jott messages without having to pay long distance fees.

Reminders

Q: Can I set recurring reminders?
A: Not yet, but we are working on it!
Q: Why do reminders show up 15 minutes before the time I set them for?
A: Much like an email client on your computer (Outlook, for instance) reminds you of a meeting on your calendar, we figured to actually remind you of something, it would be better to know a little in advance of a meeting or event, than at the time it actually started. In the future, reminders will be customizable, for those of you who would rather not receive them 15 minutes prior to the time you set them for.
Q: My reminders are showing up at the wrong time. What do I do?
A: Most likely your time zone is set incorrectly for your Jott account. You can change this by going to the Profile section of the Settings page.

Text Messages

Q: I have selected the option to receive receipt text messages. Why I am I not receiving Jott text messages?
A: Have you changed mobile providers recently? If so, log on and go the Phones section of the Settings page. There you will see the button "I changed mobile providers"; this will reset our system to look for your new mobile network. Once you have done this, try sending a Jott again!

If you have yourself as a contact please read this. If you haven't changed mobile providers recently and do not have yourself in your contact list, please fill out the support form and we'll get cracking on what could be going wrong.
Q: How do I send either an email or a text message to my contacts?
A: If you have entered both the person's email address and phone number then we send both a text message and email to the person. If you prefer to only send text messages, then make sure that contact has a phone and no email address. If you prefer to only send email to that contact, make sure that contact has an email address but no phone number.
