A Closer Looks at Lists
July 9, 2008From time to time we get requests asking for examples of different ways people use Jott. Recently we received one along these lines that was specific to the different types of lists people create. So to get those creative/productivity juices flowing, here are a list of common Jott lists:
To do
Work
Home
Shopping
Groceries
Music
Mileage
Personal
Ideas
Expenses
Books
Movies
I’ve found the Movies, Music and Books lists particularly helpful, though they fall outside the realm of traditional productivity. It’s really nice to not have to struggle to remember the name of that song that came on the radio and I wanted to buy later when I got home.
If there are any ideas you don’t see up there that you think might be helpful for others, let us know!

Idea — request-a-list. You know how I can text Jott and request details about a specific contact? I think the same type of thing for a list would be perfect!
Example: the “shopping” list you have above. I Jott to my shopping list all week long, and then when I’m at the store all I have to do is —
1) TXT request that the list be sent to me via SMS,
OR
2) Using some iteration of JottFeeds or just a playback, I could call Jott and request that my own recorded audio be played back or read back to me!
This saves paper *and* time! Plus it would really help me because I always leave my grocery lists at home, so it would save gas too.

I have a Jott List for Geocaches that I have found. When I’m out and about, and I find a geocache (or 6) I want to remember what order I find them in, and remind myself of some of the details of the find. So I jott to my geocache list. then later when I am ready to log my finds, I rely on my jott notes to know what happened when.

I posted an article about how I use it for Child Custody records. http://www.mysoftwarestartup.com/blogs/general/archive/2008/07/10/using-jott-for-child-custody-records.aspx

Great ideas for more ways to use lists! I’m also a fan of a list of restaurants to try and places to go– I find I get suggestions mostly from friends when I’m out so those Jott lists work well for me

Will the iPhone version of Jott allow us to specify a link (e.g., Remember the Milk?)?

Not right now- it’s a really a streamlined notepad and list experience at the moment. Have you tried it yet?!

I did try it. I like it but I use RTM for all of my tasks so I prefer to get my info in there. This will work for now. Maybe I’ll spur on a development task

It would be great to have some sort of projects category or export.
eg. I use Jott for common day to day lists but when it comes time to add stuff
to my Nozbe projects which Jott links to, I can only dump them into the main folder there.
When it asks Who I Want to Jott, if I could say, Nozbe, Projects, Trip to Toronto it would help me immensely.
Secondly, I’d love to see a Cancel button on the iPhone version. It seems to start recording on a hair trigger and I am constantly deleting white noise.
That said, GREAT SERVICE. I think its one of the top handful of tools available today on the web!!

@ Jonathan - Thanks for the great feedback. I’ll pass this along to the folks who work on those different parts of the Jott service!

It seems a bit cumbersome if you want to add more than one item to a list…It seems to work under the assumption that you only want to add one thing per call….Definitely not something for a shopping list. I tried adding multiple things, but it gave me a comma separated single item.
How does one go about quickly adding 10 SEPARATE items at a time to a list?
thanks,
joe

Tip: Create a list called ‘Parking Spot’ - call Jott when you are leaving the airport parking lot and remind yourself what Bingo combination you’re located this time!

I recently tried to use iPhone Jott while driving my car. I needed to make some reminder notes, so I pulled my iPhone out of its case. I brought up Jott while I was driving, and was struck with not being able to quickly tell how to just record one or more notes without taking my eyes off the road for more than a fraction of a second. It would have been useful for Jott to come up with a red record button and/or have some large and conspicuous icons to touch to record notes.

Hi Garry, the entire screen is actually the record button, you can tap anywhere on the screen and it will start recording and tap anywhere again to stop recording.

My Jott needs are very simple and I almost exclusively use the iphone app. I just want to record a note and get it to ToodleDo, which I use for all my lists. Right now this is a mostly manual process. If this feature would work with the iphone I would quickly become a paid member.

In the spirit of keeping it simple, I use Jott to capture GTD stuff when out and about. A Jott ‘to myself’ becomes email in Outlook. It’s easy to drag email to Tasks on the sidebar, set Category @computer, @phone, etc and a date if appropriate. The rest of my GTD management is done in Outlook. While I’ve just moved back to Mac after many years on PC, I am running Parallels to support a couple Windows apps, and continuing to use Outlook and BlackBerry for GTD. I’m guessing there are Mac / iPhone / Bento ways to implement as well, but seems like relearning would be little incremental value. Jott, however, is a very nice enhancement, particularly when driving / hands-free to capture notes [drag email to Journal] or next actions [drag email to Tasks]
