How to choose the right windbreaker?

Between seasons, when the weather becomes unpredictable, a windbreaker can quickly become indispensable. Lightweight, protective, and easy to slip on, it's perfect for days when anything can happen: a passing shower, a cool breeze, or a return of the sun.

But you still need to choose the right windbreaker. If it's too thin, it won't provide enough protection. If it's too stiff, it will restrict your movements. If it's poorly cut, it will end up at the back of your closet. So it's best to identify the key criteria before you buy.

Follow the guide to choose the right windbreaker!

What is a windbreaker really for?

A windbreaker is neither a full raincoat nor a thick coat. It is a mid-layer garment designed to protect against wind, light rain, and temperature fluctuations. It is worn when the weather becomes changeable, particularly in spring, fall, or during summer vacations at the seaside.

Its light weight means you can take it anywhere: in a bag, suitcase, or backpack. It slips on in seconds and does its job without weighing you down.

This is also what makes it an essential item in a versatile wardrobe, for men, women, and children alike.

Which cut should you choose?

A straight-cut windbreaker leaves room to layer a sweatshirt or light knit, which is practical for everyday wear. A more fitted style slims the silhouette and slips easily under a coat or parka when needed.

Length also plays a role. Short models are perfect for walking or cycling, where freedom of movement is important. A long windbreaker offers better protection for the lower back, especially when the wind is blowing or you are spending more time outdoors.

Details such as the hood (fixed or foldable), elasticated cuffs, drawstrings, and zippers add real comfort. In particular, they prevent unpleasant drafts!

What material is best for a good windbreaker?

At JOTT, most models are designed using a blend of polyamide and polyurethane, a combination that guarantees lightness, strength, and water repellency.

Some models are lined with sherpa, a soft, insulating material that is ideal for cool or wet days. This type of inner lining adds real thermal comfort while maintaining the flexibility of the cut.

The padding, where present, is made of polyester: lightweight, easy to care for, and effective at retaining heat without adding bulk. The polyamide lining provides comfort while reinforcing the garment's durability.

Which windbreaker for which use?

A windbreaker should also be chosen based on your lifestyle. If you are often on the move (on foot, by bike, or between appointments), a lightweight, easy-to-carry model will make all the difference. Packable windbreakers, which can be folded into their own pocket, are particularly practical: they slip into a bag or suitcase, ready to be pulled out at the slightest change in weather. Ideal for both city life and getaways, this type of jacket can easily be worn over a sweatshirt or shirt.

For more comprehensive protection, especially if you are regularly outdoors, long lined styles provide enhanced thermal comfort without compromising mobility.

Also consider adjustable hoods, secure zippers, and deep pockets: these are small details, but they make all the difference when the wind blows or you get caught in a downpour!

What is the best season to wear a windbreaker?

Often seen as an extra layer, windbreakers have a place in your everyday wardrobe. They're not just for fall or sudden downpours.

In spring, when the weather is unpredictable, a windbreaker ticks all the boxes: it protects you from the wind without being stifling, slips easily into a bag, and can be thrown on as soon as the sky clouds over. You can wear it to work, out for a walk, or to take the kids to school, without feeling weighed down.

In summer, it remains useful in the evening, at the seaside, or at high altitudes. A lightweight windbreaker is enough to block out the cool wind or humidity without getting too hot. It's also the item you keep in the trunk of your car or take with you on weekend trips, "just in case."

In the fall, it becomes a real everyday jacket, especially if you get around a lot on foot or by bike. Models lined with warm material are perfect for maintaining a good level of thermal comfort without necessarily having to resort to a down jacket. It can be worn over a sweater or fine knit, from mid-season until the first real cold spells.

In winter, it all depends on how you use it. For temperate regions or active commutes, some lined windbreakers work well, especially when paired with a good base layer.

What is the difference between a windbreaker and a raincoat?

The two are often confused, especially when certain models provide protection against both wind and rain. But there is a difference: windbreakers are designed primarily to block the wind. Lightweight, breathable, easy to put on or fold up, they are ideal when temperatures are cool and the weather is dry or changeable, especially during outdoor activities.
Raincoats, on the other hand, are designed to withstand even heavy rain. They are often made from denser fabric or treated to prevent water from passing through (water-repellent effect), with reinforced seams and a hood that provides good coverage.

At JOTT, many models offer multiple benefits: they effectively block the wind while providing protection from light rain, so you can stay comfortable when the weather changes.

Things to remember when choosing the right windbreaker

  • Consider your primary use: in the city, on vacation, for daily commutes, or outdoor excursions?
  • Check the cut: straight for easy layering, fitted for a more streamlined style.
  • Choose the right material: light water-repellent for everyday wear, lined for extra comfort in mid-season.
  • Consider the practical details: hood, zippers, pockets, elastic cuffs... anything that really improves comfort.
  • Adapt to the season: a lightweight model is sufficient for summer or spring, while a lined windbreaker is perfect for fall or a mild winter.
FAQ: Do you still have questions about windbreakers?

Not always. A windbreaker effectively blocks the air but is not necessarily waterproof. At JOTT, some models are treated to be water-repellent, which is sufficient for light rain. For true waterproofing, it is better to choose a jacket made of waterproof fabric with reinforced seams, such as a raincoat or parka.

The windbreaker is designed for comfort in mild weather conditions: it protects against wind and light rain, while remaining lightweight and breathable. The waterproof jacket, on the other hand, is designed for wetter conditions with a completely waterproof fabric. It offers maximum protection against the rain, but can be a little warmer to wear on a daily basis.

Some JOTT windbreakers are designed to remain comfortable to wear even when you're on the move, thanks to breathable materials and integrated ventilation systems (zippers, ventilated panels). For dynamic activities (cycling, brisk walking), opt for a light jacket with a loose fit at the back and underarms.

Check the label or product description: a water-repellent treatment is a good indicator for light rain. If you're looking for true waterproofing, check for sealed seams, protected zippers, and fabric labeled as waterproof (e.g., technical membrane). At JOTT, some reversible windbreakers feature a waterproof side for added versatility.

For urban or regular use, choose a packable model that is easy to carry and put on. Opt for a straight cut for greater comfort, an adjustable hood, and deep pockets. A light, water-repellent, and breathable jacket is ideal for moving around freely while staying protected.
