Understanding heat levels
The thermal power of a down jacket cannot be guessed, it must be measured. Each model is associated with a warmth level: a simple scale designed to help you find the jacket that really suits your needs. It ranges from 1 to 5, from the lightest to the most protective. Grand Froid down jackets correspond to levels 4 and 5, the highest in the range.
Level 4 is for severe winter cold, which sets in as early as November and doesn't let up until March. These models are designed to withstand temperatures as low as -12°C, thanks to generous natural down padding (90% down, 10% feathers).
Level 5, meanwhile, is designed for extreme temperatures: down to –20°C. It is found on certain technical garments such as parkas and ski jackets.
What makes the difference is the loft of the down, also known as fill power. The higher this number, the more air the jacket traps and the more heat it retains.
